You can enjoy true Indian hospitality in villages of Rajasthan where according to an old saying guest is treated like god. Viewed from a distance these villages resemble any usual Indian village but once you enter in a village you realize the uniqueness. The life is very calm and slow in the villages as the rural people are still following the age-old living habits.
The largest part of the small villages have small rounded thatched roof huts with walls made up of plaster of clay, cow dung, and hay. These huts usually have boundaries called "baras" which are typically made up of the dry branches of a nettle-like shrub. The only decoration that can be seen in these of houses are in form of a texture in the plaster in the facade or designer patterns at the entrance and outside the kitchen. In some larger villages you can find bigger houses thata rural woman of Rajasthan mostly belong to affluent Zamindar families. The people of these villages belong to different communities and are segregated according to the nature of their line of work. Mostly of the villagers depend on agriculture for their livelihood and usually follow age-old agricultural practices that date back to the time of Indus valley civilization. Observing farmers in the fields while they plough them with camels and buffaloes is really a cherishable experience. You can also take a tour in the green field and watch women milking the cattle while the elderly and young take them out to pastures for grazing. Religion plays an important role in the lives of rural people. Each house has a separate corner reserved specially for worship. Every morning, the villagers pray before a calendar image of the god to bless them as always and protect them from all evils. The images of local deities daubed with vermilion can be seen outside every village.
Like any other thing meal is also very simple and modest. The principal meal for the rural family consists of dinner, when freshly baked bread and porridge is served with a yoghurt curry called karhi, and with vegetables that may consist of dried beans, or fresh produce. Breakfast is a usually glass full of hot tea with stale bread, and lunch is a frugal meal of unleavened bread eaten with a spicy chutney of chillies and garlic. Meals are mostly vegetarian though meat is also eaten by some communities like Rajputs but that is occasional.
